1. Some Categories to proper Task Response
These things can be categorized as below.
- Follow a proper structure.
- Use a wide range of sentence variety.
- Use a wide range of vocabulary.
- Need to answer all the aspects of a question prompt proper Task Response is required.
Tricks Magical have already published articles on proper structure and sentence variety. Task Response IELTS Writing and vocabulary part were also discussed to an extent in those. Now in this article, I am discussing Task Response or Task Achievement thoroughly.
It is very important to understand all the aspects of a question. You should spend around five minutes in understanding the question. In a question prompt, there are some keywords and some instruction words. Understanding both is important for answering the question properly.
In this article, Tricks Magical are trying to cover the variety of questions that may come in the exam which causes confusions and make test-takers lose marks in the task response criteria and they end up getting only 6.5 bands even after covering all other three aspects.
Before discussing different types of IELTS questions, we would like you to read my article on IELTS reading tips and IELTS essay structure where I have explained the structure of each paragraph. Just to recall here, all of the paragraphs are divided into three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. Every paragraph of your essay shall answer the question in one way or other. It should express your stand on the topic directly or indirectly. I am sure if you read my earlier articles, you will be clear about the things I am discussing here as those are very important to answer IELTS question prompts properly.
Now, let us discuss different types of essay and their approach one by one.
2. (To what extent) do you agree or disagree? – Tips Task Response IELTS Writing
A statement with two aspects will be given, and you would require to agree or disagree with it. You may also prove partial agreement or disagreement.
Let us take one example here.
Some people say that parents should place restrictions on the hours their children spend watching TV and playing computer games. And encourage them to spend this time reading books instead.
To what extent you agree or disagree?
Here, most common mistake students make is that they write on one aspect in both the body paragraphs. It means that they either choose reading books, or they choose watching television and to play computer games. They will make both the paragraphs on one aspect neglecting the other aspect.
So, what should be the right approach?
According to me, it is best to give the 70 % weightage to the aspect to which you agree/disagree, and 30% to the other aspect. That means even if you say that reading books are more important because of such and such reason, you should write something about watching TV and playing computer games. You need to touch every aspect of the question prompt.
There is another form of agree and disagree questions in which only one statement is given. Those are relatively easy to answer as you need to answer on only one aspect. Make both the paragraphs on the reasons for your agreement/disagreement.

3. Discuss both views and give your opinion – Task Response IELTS Writing
A statement with two aspects will be given, and you would require to discuss both and give your opinion.
Let us take one example here.
Some people believe that the construction of new public buildings such as museums, town halls and sporting facilities is more important than renovation of the existing ones, while others disagree. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
These questions seem relatively easy, however, you should also take care of one important thing here.
You need to make one paragraph for each side. In the conclusion paragraph, you need to give your opinion with some reasons relevant to the aspects you have discussed in the body paragraphs. Try not to introduce new reasons to support your opinion.
4. Do (you think) the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
These are quite similar to one discussed above that is discussion and opinion type.
Let us take one example here.
At the present time, the population of some countries includes a relatively large number of young adults, compared with the number of older people.
Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?
Here in this question type, you may write two advantages in one paragraph and two disadvantages in other or you may write one advantage and one disadvantage in one paragraph and second advantage and second disadvantage in other. Whatever you may choose, try to write the one in the body paragraph 2 which you want to prove to outweigh the other.
It is very important to write a good conclusion here covering all the aspects of advantages/disadvantages discussed.
For example:
While there are disadvantages to the…….such as ……and a……., these must be weighed against the …….. and ……benefits the…….offers. According to me, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
5. Is this a positive or negative development? Tips Task Response IELTS Writing
These question types are most common these days. Here also the approach should be the same as we have discussed in the agree and disagree question with one statement.
Let us take one example here.
These days some people spend a lot of money on tickets to go to sporting or cultural events. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Here you need to understand the question very carefully. For example, in the above question, we are supposed to write on people spending money on events is good or bad. Read the question carefully, plan for five minutes and then start writing.
6. What are the causes of this and what actions can be taken to solve this problem?
In this category two question types come.
a) Problems and solutions
b) Causes and solutions
In such questions, one paragraph shall be made on each aspect. That means one paragraph on cause/problems and the second paragraph on solutions.
Examples:
Experts say older people were happier and healthier in the past because they did more exercise and spent more time with family and friends, whereas now many suffer loneliness and health problems. What are the causes of this and what are some solutions?
In many countries, the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer. Why is this a problem? What solutions are there to tackle this problem?
Thus, coming to the end, I would like to say that there can be other forms as well as the IELTS test-makers are not limited to these, but the basic approach and formation remain the same.
