So, let us begin with the basic structure and how you should approach this.
Structure of IELTS Writing Task 2
We are going to make four paragraphs for our essay. That shall be as below write IELTS Writing Task 2:
- INTRODUCTION PARA
- BODY PARA 1
- BODY PARA 2
- CONCLUSION PARA
Now, lets first discuss the introduction paragraph.
INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH – Write IELTS Writing Task 2
In our INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH, we are going to write four lines as below:
i. What is the topic?
ii. What is the question?
iii. What is your stand on that?
iv. What are your reasons for that stand?
Let’s discuss them one by one
Line no 1: Understand the central idea of the question write IELTS Writing Task 2
First of all, we should write understand the central idea of the question.
To understand this, let us take one example.
In the exam, we may get a prompt like below:
Some people believe that the construction of new public buildings such as museums, town halls and sporting facilities is more important than renovation of the existing ones, while others disagree. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
In this, the central idea is old and new buildings. So, we should begin our essay by writing something on the topic. But, definitely not on the specific question on which type of building investments should be made.
Thus, our first line should be something on the importance of the buildings to a society or a country.
It can be like this:
Buildings, old and new, of a country, establish the identity of a nation.
See, in the above line, nothing is written specific to the question but a general statement is written on the topic. This sets off our essay on a journey, and it also helps to make your first impression on the examiner.
Here, you may try writing your own for the sake of practice.
Line no 2. Paraphrasing means to write the question in your own words.
Now let us move to the second line which is basically the paraphrasing of the question prompt. Paraphrasing means to write the question in your own words.
So, our second line should be something like below:
It is often argued by some people that rather than the renovation of older buildings, more investments should be made on developing the state of the art structures.
Here, we have simply written the question in some different arrangements of the words.
Line no 3. Stand on the specific question
Now the third line should be your stand on the specific question i.e where the investment should be made: older buildings, or new buildings.
So, our third line should be something like below:
I unequivocally believe that disbursing funds for both types of infrastructure is indispensable.
Moving on to line no 4 and the final line of the introduction paragraph.
Line no 4. Highlight two reasons or two subtopics
The fourth line should highlight two reasons or two subtopics in support of our stand, supporting your stand on the question. Why two reasons/ subtopics, because they are going to form the basis of two body paragraphs.
So, our fourth line should be something like below:
This is because the older ones have a historical background and the newer ones are according to the latest designs those are imperative for the current needs of citizens of the place.
After we have mentioned the importance of newer and older buildings, we need to support our reasons in the upcoming paragraphs.
BODY PARAGRAPH 1 – write an Essay IELTS Writing Task 2
In our BODY PARAGRAPH, we are going to write four lines as below:
- Write Reason 1 or Subtopic 1 in details
- Discuss the reason.
- Support reason with one example.
- Close the paragraph.
Let’s discuss them one by one
Line no 5.Describe the reason in detail.
The first-line in this para shall describe the reason in detail.
To begin with, older buildings should maintain because of their cultural significance.
If you have noticed carefully, here, we have just paraphrased the reason 1. Nothing has been changed significantly.
Now in line no 6, we need to discuss the reason in the context of the topic.
Line no 6. Need to discuss the reason in detail with reasoning.
Investing money in such structures succours to preserve a nations’ cultural background that is necessary to instil customs in the younger generation so that they feel proud of their past and connect to their roots. Moreover, such infrastructure can be useful for the tourism industry because tourists always get attracted to unique places.
Here we can have a combination of supporting sentences and contrasting sentences. Supporting means anything in support of our reason, and contrasting means anything in contrast to our reason i.e. we can use a conditional sentence here
Line no 7. Give one example here supporting our reason.
Taj Mahal, for example, not only represents India to the whole world, but it also allures millions of holidaymakers towards it.
Here we are required to give examples from our personal experience and knowledge.
We can give personal examples, but it is recommended to give general examples like the one discussed above.
Moving on to the final line of our Body paragraph 1.
Line no 8.Close the paragraph and let the reader
We need to close the paragraph and let the reader know that we are concluding our subtopic.
Therefore, it is necessary to renovate older buildings to preserve a country`s heritage.
Here we can notice that our paragraphs are also following the same structure of our essay on the whole i.e introduction, body and conclusion. This I have explained in the reading sections also which you may also check for a clearer understanding.
BODY PARAGRAPH 2 – Write IELTS Writing Task 2
In our BODY PARAGRAPH 2, we are going to write similar four lines as we have done in our body paragraph 1.
- Write Reason 2 or Subtopic 2 in details
- Discuss the reason.
- Support reason with one example.
- Close the paragraph.
Line no 9.Investment in the newer buildings
Investment in the newer buildings is useful to build contemporary structures with the current needs of the netizens.
Line no 10.The operating cost of these
The new infrastructure will not only accommodate the latest electrical systems required for operating buildings and security purposes, but the operating cost of these will be far less than operating older buildings.
Line no 11.To illustrate
To illustrate, leadership in Mumbai, the financial capital of India, has allocated around one hundred billion dollars on newer roads and recreational centres to ameliorate city’s crumbling systems.
Line no 12.Allocation to develop newer buildings
Thus, money allocation to develop newer buildings is imperative.
Finally, moving on to the CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH.
CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH – Write IELTS Writing Task 2
In our CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH, we are going to write two lines as under:
- Summarize reason 1 and reason 2 in other words.
- Prove your stand again in other words.
Let’s discuss them one by one
Line no 13. Summarize reasons
Summarize reasons (not the main topic) here in different words from both the introduction and body paragraphs.
To recapitulate, while spending money on older buildings helps in preserving the nation’s culture and to earn valuable foreign revenue from the tourism industry, newer buildings can be developed as per the current needs of a place.
Line no 14.Repeat your stand on the topic and conclude the essay.
The final line of your essay shall repeat your stand on the topic and conclude the essay.
Therefore, I strongly agree that there should be a fine balance when authorities decide where they should put their funds.
Thus, if we now revise again, it is very easy to write an essay if it is divided into different sections and parts. This is what we have done above. Now our full essay will look like this:
Buildings, old and new, of a country, establish the identity of a nation. It is often argued by some people that rather than the renovation of older buildings, more investments should be made on developing the state of the art structures. I unequivocally believe that disbursing funds for both types of infrastructure is indispensable.
