I. TOEIC Part 4 General
1. Exam structure
The listening part of TOEIC Part 4 is divided into 30 questions, equivalent to 10 speeches. The characteristic of this talk is that there is only one speaker, a clear voice and often related to familiar topics in daily life so it is easy to hear and determine the correct answer.
With the new TOEIC test structure applied from June 1, 2019, Part 4 will appear in the form of the test taker who must combine listening information with the given chart and image to answer.
You should see the details of the changes in the new format TOEIC format 2020
2. Allocate time to work – Tips part 4 Toeic test Listening
Starting the TOEIC part 4 test, you will hear the instruction for 30 seconds before entering the listening test.
After listening to the talk, you will listen to 3 questions related to the dialogue. The time to read the question is 1 second, the interval between questions is 8 seconds.
So when listening to the 3rd question, you have to quickly solve all the questions and use the remaining time to read the next paragraph.
You should not spend too much time on a question because it is difficult to remember all the information in the past dialogue. Focus on getting used to the time distribution so that after listening to the third question you have started reading to the next conversation.
3. Regular Topics Appear – Tips Part 4 TOEIC Test Listening
Part 4 often appears some common topics:
- News / radio topics
- Tourism theme
- Recorded message subject
- Topic introduces people
- Sometimes the content of the talks is also changed for more variety.
3. Common types of questions
To understand the types of questions that often appear in TOEIC Listening Part 4, please watch this video:
A dialogue in Part 4 is always structured: General information about the talk – Details of the talk – Next action
Therefore, in each paragraph, there will be three small questions equivalent to the content: Ask the general information, Ask the details and Reasoning questions, followed by questions with 4 answers A , B, C, D respectively for your choice. In particular, the questions in part 4 do not follow the chronological order.
a. Question type for general information only
You will hear the answer to this type of question right in the beginning of the conversation. The frequently asked questions of this section are:
- What is the main purpose of speech?
- What is the purpose of report?
- Who is most likely the speaker?
- Who is the speech aimed at?
- Where is speaker now?
For questions about purpose / topic, the answer to this question usually appears in the first 2 sentences. As for questions about characters and locations, you need to reason and listen to the related vocabulary.
b. Detailed question types
This type of question will ask more in depth about the topic of the conversation and the content in question. Therefore, there is not a specific sample of questions for this form but it always changes unpredictably. Questions can be asked about time, place, object, or other specifics like:
- How many years of experience does Mr. Hegay have in his field of work?
- When will the boss leave for his vacation?
- How often do the listeners meet?
You need to listen carefully to the conversation to understand the words to ask and keywords to be able to answer these questions.
c. Type of inference questions
Questions about upcoming actions are often mentioned at the end of the speech and often ask what the listener / speaker will do next. This question may be critical or directly addressed in the speech.
- What does speaker suggest?
- What does the speaker advise the audience to do?
To do well in this section, you need to listen carefully to the final sentences of the speech with suggested keywords, suggestions, requirements …
So this section has a total of 30 sentences. Similarly with Part 3, you can hardly use the tips to find the answer for this listening section. This is a difficult point for those who have weak listening skills as well as analyzing the hearing information. Besides, the element of reading voice, reading speed, intonation will also more or less make it difficult for candidates without a solid foundation.
II. Tips TOEIC LISTENING PART 4
Before this module, watch the video below to pay attention to the habits outlined in the TOEIC Listening Part 4:
1. Read the question – Define the content
Reading questions in advance and predicting answers is the most essential step when taking the TOEIC test. To take advantage of this method, you should follow these steps:
- Step 1: There is a section for each conversation beginning, and this is enough time for you to read through the questions and the 4 answers one at a time. Through reading in advance, you can predict the content of the listening section and partly prepare psychologically for the official audio.
- Step 2: After the dialog is played, you should listen carefully to choose the correct answer and fill in the Answer Sheet. This section will be simpler when you read ahead and anticipate the information of the answer.
- Step 3: After that, when the tape comes to the question and answer of the conversation, it is time for you to read the question of the next conversation to make your own predictions.
This cycle is repeated to maintain the pace of the test.
To do this process, you need to read the meaning of the question and imagine what the conversation is about and where it might take place.
Example: When will the caller’s boss leave for his vacation?
A. Today
B. Next week
C. In two weeks
D. Next month
Based on the question, we can determine that in the conversation there is a reference to the boss (boss) and most likely to have the staff (Staff), the content of the talk will refer to Vacation (vacation).

You can listen to audio to determine if the predictions are correct.
2. Determine the role of each character
The questions in Part 4 do not follow the writing order, so you need to be very focused when listening to the speech. You should listen carefully to the content from the beginning to the end and record the important keywords to choose the correct answer, avoiding confusion when taking the test.
Part 4 of the TOEIC test, which often has numerical questions, is one of the most easily lost parts of a candidate. You also need to pay close attention.

Welcome everyone to this year’s annual House and Home Show. We are proud to announce that this year’s show will be the biggest ever held in this state. There will be one hundred and fifty exhibitors, displaying more than two thousand different home products. You will find exciting, innovative, practical, artistic, and beautiful designs of products ranging from mansions built in stone to houses made with bottle-openers. In the architectural section, you can find stunning models of the latest in home deigns, including houses, apartments, and villas. The furniture section includes both the most modern new modular designs and a range of genuine antiques. And that’s not all. We also have extensive displays of dinnerware, cookware and lighting. So let’s begin this spectacular event.
In question 2, if you do not listen carefully to one hundred and fifty exhibitors, but only superficially, you will most likely choose the wrong one hundred (100) or fifty (50) answers.
And the first question to ask about “What is the beginning?” Actually, it was mentioned exactly in the last sentence: So let’s begin this spectacular event.
3. Inference from available data
Unlike Part 3, Part 4 has almost no traps. That is, you will not need to worry too much about negative traps – as opposed to the previous one. If you hear a sentence that has the same expression as the answer, it will probably be the correct answer.
Because of that “analogy”, the words in the answer will also be changed but remain the same meaning, ie using synonyms. This again requires you to constantly replenish your vocabulary to avoid losing points on the TOEIC Part 4 test.

Also, the construction on Peace Bridge has its five lanes reduced down to town lanes. Those who are planning to travel across the bay are advised to use the Ambassador Bridge instead. This has been Rob Stewart with the day’s traffic report.
